Il Lago Restaurant & Coffee Lounge
December 2020 saw the re-opening of our brand-new Il Lago restaurant providing guests an al fresco dining experience along with the perfect hideaway on rainy days while offering spectacular Lake views while dining. The old “Beach Lounge” was redesigned & renovated into our new Coffee Lounge that connects to our Il Lago restaurant. The Coffee Lounge offers free unlimited wi-fi to all in house guests & is a quite area for guests to enjoy a book, do some work or just savour the beauty of Lake Malawi before them; while being able to enjoy the coffee’s, teas, and desserts that are served in the Coffee Lounge.
Harry’s Bar & Pool Lounge
Dining at the Retreat is an eclectic experience. Guests can savour fine Mediterranean cuisine, celebrate the tastes of Malawi or feast on Italian specialties in our casual restaurant and bar. Our natural settings will inspire you ...claim a lakeside table, swim to the poolside bar, join us on a theme night or sit on a torchlit terrace by the beach for an unforgettable meal.
Hotel Gym
The Makokola Retreat boasts a state of the art gym, with all TechnoGym equipment, suited for our guests to slot in some regular physical activity during their stay. Located at the Lake Suite section & is accessible to all hotel guests. Available equipment include: Treadmill, Skillrun Machine, Cycle Machine, Elliptical Machine, Skill row Machine, Lat Machine, Leg Extension Machine, Artis Vario (Stepping) Machine, Shoulder Press Machine & Adjustable Bench & Free Weights Up to 14kg.
The Gym is open daily from 05:00 – 22:00 for guests to enjoy. Proper gym attire is required with closed workout shoes & no kids below the age of 16 years allowed.
Mlambe Golf Club
Mlambe means Baobab in Chichewa which is the widely spoken language in Malawi. Located alongside the Retreat, the course offers nine holes of par three golf in a unique African setting which golfers will find as challenging as it is beautiful. The course is sculptured around natural topography, with water streams positioned as visual extensions of a small lagoon and a perfect blend with giant baobab trees and sand. Mlambe is known for its special African ambience. The vegetation is indigenous, some varieties which are hundreds of years old. Beautiful birds such as malachite kingfishers, lilac breasted rollers, gray herons, and fish eagles can be glimpsed while playing. You can also enjoy playing bowls at our flood lit bowling green next to the Club House.

Tropex Nursery
Tropex Nursery is located outside the Makokola Retreat main entrance next to the Mlambe Golf Club and is perfect for a early morning or late afternoon stroll.
All the fauna & flora found on the Retreat’s property can be found at Tropex and guests can buy some plants before returning home to continue the magic of gardening in their own back yard. The nursery also offers a variety of bird life for guests to enjoy.
