Introduction

The Makokola Retreat boasts a beautiful Conference Centre which was built in 2013 and opened in 2014. It was given the fitting name of “Tikambilane” meaning; “Let’s Discuss”. The name was given so that all who enter the doors, enter them for the sole purpose to ‘Discuss’ the past, present and future. The theme of the Conference Centre was designed with Mother Nature in mind.

Starting from the outside, the pillars surrounding the Conference Centre was built round and strong like that of a tree. On top of the pillars, the entire roof rests, which resembles the weight a tree carries and emphasizes the goal of all who enter; to work towards a unified outcome for a brighter future. With the roof resting on top of the pillars predominantly, more natural light is allowed in, limiting the need of using excessive amounts of unnatural light.

Inside, finishes are done with sustainable wood – doors and windows made from blue gum trees – and floors from one of the fastest and most sustainable product; bamboo. The decorations all scream enlightenment with wood carvings and woven baskets, all made and sourced in Malawi. The pictures on the walls are big and all about trees. The electronic equipment is state of the art with Bose speakers and Shure Microphones to provide clear as day sound. Full High Definition Projectors are found in each conference room, along with 50-inch flat screen TV’s in each board room.

The Tikambilane Conference Centre is not just another Conference Centre. The Tikambilane Conference Centre is made for resolution, growth and clarity for all who enter its doors; looking towards the future!
